From the fire to the abyss

Hello, and welcome to my new blog! My name is Alex, and three weeks ago, I lost my job as a chef. It was my fifth job in a year, and while some of these I left on my own accord, others I was let go from for reasons that were beyond my control. It was a difficult pill to swallow, and seemed to come completely out of the blue, but I know deep down that the reasons behind it were more than likely a consequence of my own unarticulated feelings and mindset.

After a short period of shock, upset, disbelief, self-criticism, reflection and questioning that ensued after the frankly brutal eviction from my last job, I realised that in order to stop this unhappy cycle of work, I needed to make a change. A friend suggested that I try my hand at copywriting and UX design. I have always enjoyed writing, helping other with theirs, and the idea of working from home has become increasingly appealing.

Over the past few weeks, I have researched the industry, talked to friends in the know, and started an Open University content creation course through Future Learn. I have also purchased all the necessary equipment (basically a big monitor to connect to my tiny laptop) and have begun building a portfolio website to hopefully, eventually secure some real work.

Despite my excitement about this new chapter in my life, I am also anxious about the potential for failure and my ability to adjust to a new home-based, desk-orientated lifestyle. For as long as I can remember, my work has been physically demanding, fuelled by adrenaline, and leaving little time for breaks, reflection, academic learning or the opportunity to sit with my own feelings or become comfortable in my own company for hours at a time. So, getting into a routine that allows for self-care and moderate exercise will be a key part of my journey.

With this blog, I hope to share my ex

periences in the busy, noisy, competitive and ever-changing digital content creation industry, and to connect with others who may be going through similar transitions in their lives.

One thing has been clear from the start; the more I learn to navigate this new terrain the more I realise how little I knew, but to prove that it's not just Gen Z who can embrace manifestation, today, with the the power of positive thinking, is "day one" of my life as a digital content creator.

Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I can't wait to see where it takes us!
